Frequently Asked Questions about ChromebOOKS
How do I log in?
CKSD Staff - your Google Account login has already been created. Teachers will use the @ckschools.org domain, and students will use @ckstudents.org. Teachers will get a temporary password that they can change. Students may choose to use their student ID# as passwords (so keep them safe), or another password as instructed by their teacher.
How do I connect to wi-fi if I'm not at school? (Staff)
You will be able to connect to your own personal wi-fi network. In the lower right corner of your Chromebook screen, click to open settings. Look for your wi-fi network and connect.
How long does the battery last?
Depending on use, you can expect anywhere from 8-10 hours on a full charge.
How long does it take to charge?
From 0% to 100% - appx 2 hours = screen must be closed for it to charge.
How do I have the Chromebook go to "sleep"?
Just close the screen/cover of the device.
How do I log off?
Click on your profile picture in the lower right corner of the screen and then click "sign out".
How do I shut down?
After signing out, you can use the power button on the Chromebook, or click "shut down" in the lower left area of the screen.
How do I clean the screen?
Please use a dry, non-abrasive cloth (microfiber recommended) to wipe smudges or dust. Please do not use any liquids or solvents.
Do I need a case?
Student Chromebooks will be stored on the charging cart when not in use. Teachers, if you are transporting your Chromebook from school to home on a daily basis, then a case or padded bag is recommended.
Do I need a mouse?
No - the touch pad is very responsive, and although some of the strokes and shortcuts are a little different, you'll get the hang of it. For student with motor issues, a USB mouse can be attached if needed.
Can I play a CD/DVD?
No - there is no internal disk drive.
Can I use a flash drive/external hard drive?
Yes - there are two USB 3.0 ports available, as well as an SD slot
How much storage space do I have?
Google for Education (student and staff) accounts have unlimited cloud storage for school-related files. There is no storage on the individual machines.
Do I need to worry about viruses/spyware/malware/adware?
As with any internet connected device, you need to be aware of the possibility of all of these. Because the Google operating system (OS) is different from a desktop or laptop installed OS, it is more resistant to attack by viruses. Use of monitoring extensions (such as Ghostery) allow the user to see and block sites that are tracking the users' online movements.
How do I make sure kids are safe while browsing online?
When kids are on the CKSD network (either hardwired or on wi-fi) all of their internet usage is filtered and monitored. When kids are using their Google accounts on a device that is connected to a home or other wi-fi network, it is recommended that they are supervised, and that the parent/guardian has taken steps to monitor online activities. If you would like more information on Internet Safety at home, please contact Jennifer. Cleven (Technology Integration Specialist) at [email protected].
Can I install my own apps/extensions?
Students: Please check with your teacher if there is an app or an extension that you think would be valuable. We might like it so much that we want to share it with other students, too!
Staff: Yes - you are able to add apps/extension to your own account.
Can I connect to my district H: or S: drives?
No - if there are documents that you need to have access to on the Chromebook, then you could either:
1. Log in to a CKSD Windows 7 or 8 machine, open your H: or S: drive, log in to Google Chrome, and upload that file from the H: or S: drive to your Google Drive
2. Save your needed files to a flash drive and upload them to your Google Drive.
Keep in mind that all MS Office files may have some changes when opened in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.
Can I access programs like I'm used to from the district Start menu?
No - remember that the Chromebook is completely web-based. Programs that are run from the CKSD server cannot (at this time) be accessed from the Chromebook. You CAN access Moodle, PowerSchool, Renaissance (STAR/AR), Destiny, Think Central, HRW , Tumblebooks, and RAZ Kids since all of these are web-based.
How do I connect it to my IAWB?
This is called "mirroring". There is an HDMI port on the back of the Chromebook. You can use an HDMI cable (not provided) to plug your Chromebook into the HDMI port on the control box on the wall below your IAWB projector. (This means that you would be temporarily disabling your teacher-computer connection to the IAWB.) Please see the shared Google Help folder for information on mirroring.
Can I load ActivInspire?
Unfortunately, no. At this time, Promethean does not have an App/Extension that is supported by Chrome. If you need to create, download, edit, share flipcharts you will need to continue to use your teacher computer. You might experiment with using Google Slides to create presentations, or other engaging apps and "mirror" your Chromebook to your IAWB.
